Position Description: Environmental Education Summer Intern
The Environmental Education Intern for Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region (LC-NCR) will support education staff in carrying out Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) programming for DC high school students and young adults and other educational and community program services.
Core Responsibilities for the Environmental Education Intern:
• Support the staff in the education, safety, and supervision of all participants, aged 14-24
• Support the staff in leading programming and lead programs themself with staff support for Junior Rangers and Green Zone Environmental Program (GZEP)
• Support the staff in developing daily programming for SYEP
• Take direction from and support staff in any other duties as they arise, including helping with kayaking or canoe sessions, FrogWatch monitoring sessions, and education field trips
• Be on time for each day the volunteer is scheduled for
• Prepare, break down, and clean up facilities for students and visitors to Kingman Island.
• Such other duties as are necessary for the operations of the program, the Foundation, or as assigned by the Education Manager, Educator, or Kingman Island Director.
Required Skills, Experience:
• A passion for nature and working with youth in formal and informal settings.
• Experience working with youth in and out of the classroom, with an emphasis on youth from urban communities.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
• Friendly and engaging personality; excellent public speaking skills; ability to work collaboratively as part of the education and LC-NCR teams; outdoor classroom management skills.
• Willingness to work outdoors as needed in all weather conditions.
• Ability to pass federal and state background checks, drug, and TB tests
Additional Information
The Environmental Education Intern reports to the Environmental Education Manager. The intern will work with members of the Environmental Education team, Kingman Island team, and
Dent House teams over the course of the summer, as well as program partners at the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) and other local nonprofits.
An ideal start day for the intern would be in the weeks leading up to the first day of SYEP programming, ideally by June 29th.
LCF Education programming takes place on Mondays and Tuesdays for Junior Rangers, typically on Kingman Island and other green spaces around the District, such as Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens or Anacostia Park. Junior Rangers are DC high school students, aged 14-18, and are learning what it takes to become a ranger in their 6-week program, doing everything from using power tools to giving tours to investigating macroinvertebrates. Their programming is from 9am-1pm.
LCF Education programming takes place on Wednesdays and Thursdays for GZEP, typically at a DC High School in Ward 5, 6, 7, or 8, with field trips to green spaces around the District. GZEP participants are DC high school students and young adults age 14-24. GZEP participants learn about green jobs, green spaces, and hone their career skills in their 6-week program. Their programming is from 9am-3:30pm.
The Environmental Education intern must be able to get to and work from any of these locations in a reliable manner.
