Club History and Description
The Philadelphia Cricket Club was established in 1854 as a club dedicated to the playing of ‘games.’ The
Philadelphia Cricket Club was one of the four founding members of the Golf Association of Philadelphia, which
was formed in 1897. That same year, Willie Tucker finished the design of the original 18-hole St. Martins golf
course, which today is a pleasant 9-hole layout consisting of a few of the original holes and was voted #2 short
and non-traditional courses in the U.S. by Golfweek.
Because the land where the St. Martins clubhouse was located was not owned by the club, the club
purchased land in Flourtown in 1920, where a 36-hole facility was to be constructed. In 1922 the Wissahickon
course was opened, designed by famed golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast. Today, Golf Magazine ranks the
Wissahickon Course as the 98th in the top 100 golf courses in the US.
The dream of turning the Flourtown campus into a 36-hole facility was not fulfilled until 2002 when the
Militia Hill course was opened, designed by the team of Dr. Mike Hurdzan and Dana Fry. Militia Hill is currently
ranked as the 25th best course in the state of Pennsylvania.
The Philadelphia Cricket Club has played host to numerous city, state, and national championships,
including the 2015 Professional National Championship, the 2016 Constellation Senior PLAYERS
Championship, 2019 BIG10 Championship, 2024 USGA U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship, and the 2025
PGA Truist Championship (formally the Wells Fargo Championship).
In addition to world class golf, The Philadelphia Cricket Club has 18 grass tennis courts, 9 Har-Tru
courts, 4 padel courts, 7 platform tennis courts, and 4 pickleball courts at the historical St Martins campus. These
amenities helped The Philadelphia Cricket Club become the #1 ranked Racquet Facilities in 2023 by Club and
Resort Business.
Grounds Operation
The Grounds operation has 80+ employees in season spread across 3 golf courses and 2 campuses
maintaining 45 holes of golf, 18 grass tennis courts, 20-acre practice facility, and club house grounds. Within
the grounds employees there is a turf team of 12 Superintendents and Assistants that will be able to help you
during your internship and be able to give diverse and knowledgeable advice from a wide variety of turf
backgrounds. At PCC we have a wide variety of grasses and soils to manage across 3 courses. St Martins has
Poa / Bent on native soil push up greens, Militia Hill has A1 / A4 Bentgrass on California style greens, and
Wissahickon has A1/A4 on USGA greens. PCC also has both warm season and cool season grass we are
managing. St Martins has Zoysia fairways and the Flourtown campus has Zoysia and Bermuda grass at the
practice facility. Using the newest technology, for managing the crew and golf course such as robotic mowers,
robotic painters, GPS Sprayers, Task Tracker, the USGA DEACON platform and various other tools helps us
create championship conditions year-round. In the spring of 2026, PCC opened a fully renovated practice facility.
The facility features two large putting greens and five short game greens; all grassed with 007 XL Bentgrass. The
driving range tees are Bermuda, and the range fairways and target greens are Zoysia. The facility will also feature
a state-of-the-art golf performance center for which construction is scheduled to break ground in the fall of
2026.
